Devotions & Special Observances
The prayers and practices that mark our weeks, months, and seasons.
Holy Rosary
The parish gathers each evening to pray the Rosary together, entrusting our families and our community to the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Weekly Novena
Our weekly novena service, with prayers of intercession offered for the intentions of the parish families. Petitions may be submitted at the parish office.
Way of the Cross
Walking the stations of Our Lord’s passion. During Great Lent this is prayed with special solemnity, and additional services are held through Passion Week.
Eucharistic Adoration
A time of silent prayer before the Blessed Sacrament, offered for the sanctification of families and the needs of the whole parish community.
Morning & Evening Prayer
The canonical prayers of the Malankara tradition — Prabhata Namaskaram in the morning and Sandhya Namaskaram in the evening — sanctifying the beginning and end of each day.
Memorial Qurbana
Holy Qurbana offered for the departed members of our families, particularly on death anniversaries and during the season of commemoration of the faithful departed.
Our Liturgical Seasons
The Syro-Malankara Church orders its year in seven seasons, each with its own prayers, hymns, and colours. Exact dates change from year to year — the parish calendar is announced at the start of each season.
Sanctification of the Church
The liturgical year opens by consecrating the Church herself, preparing the community to receive the mystery of the Incarnation.
Annunciation
The season of expectation, recalling the announcement to the Blessed Virgin Mary and the waiting of Israel for its promised Saviour.
Nativity & Epiphany
The birth of Our Lord and His manifestation to the world — celebrated with the great feasts of Christmas and the Baptism of the Lord.
Great Lent
Fifty days of fasting, prayer, and almsgiving, culminating in Passion Week. The Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts is celebrated on weekdays.
Resurrection
The season of Easter joy — the heart of the Christian year, when the Church proclaims Christ risen and death overcome.
Season of the Apostles
Beginning with Pentecost, recalling the descent of the Holy Spirit and the mission entrusted to the Apostles — including St. Thomas, our patron.
Exaltation of the Cross
The closing season, honouring the life-giving Cross and the prophets, as the year turns once more toward the sanctification of the Church.
The Seven Sacraments
In our Eastern tradition the sacraments are known as the Holy Mysteries — the visible signs through which the grace of God enters an ordinary human life.
Baptism & Chrismation
In the Malankara tradition, Baptism and Chrismation are conferred together as a single rite of initiation. The child is washed in the water of new birth and immediately sealed with the Holy Myron, receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit — entering at once into the full life of the Church.
Holy Qurbana
The centre of our life as a parish — the Liturgy of St. James, celebrated in Malayalam with portions retained in Syriac. Here the faithful receive the Body and Blood of Our Lord. Children of the parish are prepared for their First Holy Communion through Sunday School catechism.
Confession
The mystery of reconciliation, in which God’s forgiveness is received through the ministry of the priest. Parishioners are encouraged to approach this sacrament regularly, and especially during Great Lent and before the great feasts of the year.
Holy Matrimony
The crowning of husband and wife, in which two lives are joined as one before God and the community. The Malankara marriage rite includes the blessing of the rings, the crowning of the couple, and the joining of hands — an ancient and deeply beautiful liturgy.
Anointing of the Sick
The Church’s prayer over those who are seriously ill, elderly, or approaching surgery — anointing them with blessed oil for healing of body and soul, and for the strength that God gives in times of weakness.
Holy Orders
The mystery by which men are ordained as deacons, priests, and bishops for the service of God’s people. If you sense that God may be calling you to the priesthood or to religious life, our vicar will gladly walk with you as you discern that call.
Funeral & Commemoration
Though not itself a sacrament, the burial service holds a beloved place in Malankara practice. The Church accompanies her children to the grave with prayer, and remembers them afterwards in the Qurbana — on the third, thirtieth, and fortieth days, and on anniversaries.
